Here are some interesting things you can do with your DIY infrared camcorder now that you have one:
Science Experiments - Things to see through:
- A full bottle of cola - Take a piece of paper, write something on it (big and noticeable), then place it behind a full bottle of pepsi or what have you (take the label off). Notice that by looking with the naked eye there is no way at all to see the writing on the paper, or that there even is any paper on the other side of the bottle. You can even shine a high powered flashlight and still not be able to see the paper or what's written on it. Now point your camcorder at the bottle and notice that the cola now appears as if it's water, and that you can clearly see what's written on the paper. That is IR Science at work!
- A manila envelope - Here is another cool one to try (very impressive to friends and such). Take a manila envelope (not a super thick one) and tell your friend that using your 'x-ray camera' you can see right through the envelope. When he says he doesn't believe you, tell him to write something down in marker on a piece of paper (make sure the marker reflects IR light ahead of time). After he writes something down and puts it in the envelope you go ahead and point your IR camcorder at the envelope and let it do it's thing. Then tell him what it says and watch his amazement.
- A speaker cover - This isn't too complicated. Point it at a speaker cover and most of the time the camcorder will see right through the cover to the speaker components behind it.
- A flat top stove range - Point the IR camcorder at the range part of a flat top stove and you will see all of the insides of the range. It's pretty cool.
- Some sunglasses - Some sunglasses look completely clear when viewed with the DIY IR Camcorder. Try some out.
Any of these experiments are ideal for a child's science project. As a matter of fact, my daughter did the cola thing for her school science fair and it was a hit. People couldn't believe it.
Stay tuned for more cool experiments and tutorials! I will be posting detailed instructions here soon on how to convert your camcorder into an IR camcorder. Thanks for visiting!
